Four days that between them cover the whole country. What each costs, and what the people who took it say.

Four landmarks, four completely different mornings.
Nearly everyone books one of these on the first full day. They are not interchangeable: one is a climb, one is a lift, one is a two-hour drive south, and one asks you to take your shoes off.

A capital that eats after midnight, an archipelago of limestone stacks, a heritage island that argues about noodles, a trading port painted Dutch red, tea terraces at fifteen hundred metres, and the Borneo coast.
Two coasts, and the boat is the point of both.
Limestone stacks you can only reach by hull, a mangrove system old enough to be a UNESCO geopark, river mouths that light up after dusk and a reef half an hour off the Borneo coast. Malaysia has two seas and both of them are warm.
The Malaysian days out more travellers take than any other.

Borneo is not a day trip. It is a second flight.
The peninsula and the Borneo states share a passport and almost nothing else. Two and a half hours over the South China Sea separates them, and the price floor tells you the rest: on the peninsula a good half day starts in single figures, and on the Borneo side almost nothing does.
Cities two hours apart by train or bus, and an island chain at the top of the west coast.

What a day out in Malaysia actually costs.
Every tour on the site, grouped by price. Malaysia is cheap in a way that surprises people who priced up Thailand first, and the cheap end is real inventory rather than leftovers.
Three things that happen in Malaysia and nowhere close to it.
Beaches and night markets exist all over the region. A river that flashes in sync, a forest that predates the Amazon, and a hundred-metre cavern up a painted staircase do not.

The rivers that flash in time
Berembang trees along the Selangor river hold colonies of Pteroptyx tener, a firefly that synchronises its flash with every other male in the tree. Boats go out after dusk with the motor cut, and the mangrove edge pulses like something electrical. It works best on a moonless night with no rain in the previous hour, which is why the operators watch the sky rather than the calendar.

A rainforest with a long head start
Taman Negara has been continuously forested for something like 130 million years, which makes it older than the Amazon and old enough that the ice ages went round it rather than through it. You reach the interior by longboat up the Tembeling, and the canopy walkway hangs forty metres up on rope and plank. Kinabalu Park at the other end of the country is a different climate again, cold enough at altitude for pitcher plants.

A cathedral cave up 272 steps
A limestone massif on the north edge of the city, hollowed into chambers big enough to lose a church in, with a gold Murugan forty-two metres tall at the foot of a staircase repainted in stripes. It is a working temple, so shoulders and knees stay covered, and at Thaipusam the crowd on those steps runs to a million people.

Four Malaysian bookings that will not wait for you.
Most of this country can be sorted the night before over a plate of char kway teow. These four run on daily permits, feeding times and lift slots that were decided long before your flight landed.
- 012D1N Mount Kinabalu ClimbingSabah Parks caps the number of climb permits issued each day. In the dry months they are gone months ahead, and there is no standby queue.
- 02Skip the Line: Petronas Twin Towers Ticket With Skybridge AccessThe skybridge and deck run on quarter-hour slots with a hard daily ceiling. Turn up without one and you are looking at the towers from the park.
- 03Private Full Day Sepilok Orang Utan, Bornean Sun Bear and Rainforest Discovery Center TourThe feeding platforms run to a fixed twice-daily timetable. Miss the window and the next one is the following morning.
- 04Taman Negara National Park Trek Day TourThe park runs on river-boat departures and a permit desk that shuts in the afternoon. Wet season closes the rapids without notice.
Malaysia eats late, outdoors, and standing up.
Three cuisines have been arguing in the same kitchens for two hundred years, and the result is served on plastic stools from about ten at night. A guide is worth it for exactly one reason: knowing which of forty identical stalls is the one with the queue for a reason.
By place - peninsula and Borneo
By kind of day - cave, boat, hawker stall or hill
Kuala Lumpur, Melaka, Penang, Langkawi, then the flight to Borneo.
